“The Problem with Black People” is a selection of writings by award-winning film-maker and social justice activist Angelo C Louw. Spanning his ten-year career as a columnist, this body of work unpacks the intricacies of race and race relations in contemporary South Africa through an intersectional lens. The first-time author, whose journalistic focus lies in the mainstreaming voices from the margins of society, uses his debut book to redress misconceptions about race and inequality through fact, and not popular opinion.

My filmmaking partner and I are starting a new film project. We’re turning the camera lens on journalist and activist Joseph Louw, whose much publicized exile due to the apartheid Immorality Act led to him being the only photographer to capture the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. While his images and name feature in many history books, little is known about the veteran journalist.
It is essential to capture Louw’s history, because it is one that, firstly, demonstrates the role South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle played in the greater global anti-racism movement, and secondly, honours that legacy of another great South African who was never celebrated for their success due to the apartheid regime.
